The „European network for 3D printing of biomimetic mechatronic systems – 21-COP- 0019 - EMERALD project, which is part of the Education, Scholarships, Apprenticeships, and Youth Entrepreneurship Programme (ESAYEP) under the EEA Grants 2014-2021, represents a collaborative effort between technical universities coming from Romania (Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and University Politehnica Bucharest), Norway (University of Agder), Poland (Poznan University of Technology), and one private company coming from Slovakia (Bizzcom). This project that is part of the "2021 Cooperation Projects in Higher Education Area," which was implemented in the period 2022-2023 has been focusing on providing educational tools concerning the development of biomimetic mechatronic systems for people with special needs (with amputated arms) by 3D printing technologies. At the core of the EMERALD project initiative stands the creating of a comprehensive e-book which is dedicated to the developing and realizing of such systems. This e-book is aimed to serve as an educational resource, offering in-depth knowledge and expertise in various related fields to anyone who is interested in getting knowledge and skills for conceiving and developing of biomimetic mechatronic systems that are necessary to support people with special needs (with amputated arms) in the end. Therefore, the e-book comprises a broad range of topics, including Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), Computer Programming, Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality (VR/AR), Sensors and Electronics, Bio-Mechatronics, 3D Printing / Rapid Tooling methods, Intelligent Materials, and Prescribed / Manufacturing Precision, topics that are highly important for conceiving, developing and testing of biomimetic mechatronic systems, like sensorized orthoses, prostheses or robotic arms realized in a customized way to provide support for real patients with amputated arms taking into consideration their needs. Each participating institution in the EMERALD consortium has contributed with their unique experience and expertise in the field, ensuring in this way a rich and diverse content in the e-book, accompanied by lot of practical examples and applications that are relevant in this context. This collaborative effort emphasizes the EMERALD project commitment in providing essential knowledge and skills for the conceiving, realizing and testing of biomimetic mechatronic systems, this being a valuable educational resource that is aimed not only to support educational activities, but also to open new doors for future innovations that are still needed to be done in the field of conceiving and developing of biomimetic mechatronics made by 3D printing to support in a customized way patients with amputated arms in the end.
